On Wednesday, 20th January, Paul Turner, one of our Branch members, gave a very informative talk on Myofascial Trigger Points and how they could help in podiatry.
A trigger point is a small area of painful or tender tissue within a muscle that can refer pain to distant area, either distally or proximally. An example was given of pain in the jaw resulting from a trigger point in the lower back.

The evening talk on the 15th of July was on Multiple Sclerosis given by Jan Hunter a physiotherapist by profession who is the manager of the Chiltern MS Centre. MS is an immune mediated disease involving the destruction of the myelin, a protective sheath that surrounds nerve fibres.

This one day course covered muscle imbalance, knee and hip joint assessment. The morning session consisted of lectures by an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Podiatrist and Physiotherapist. The afternoon session was practical and included demonstrations and also a chance for delegates to split into small groups to put into practice some of the techniques shown.

This meeting was presented by one of our committee members, Mike Wardlaw, who is a Podiatric Surgeon working in the NHS in Kent. He also has a Private Practice in Milton Keynes. Mike gave us a quick overview of current foot surgery commonly used in his area with some interesting case studies.

The speaker at this meeting was Barry Francis from the Society. He talked about decontamination, sterilisation and the legislation. The suppliers,Canonbury, attended and gave a brief summary of their current sterilisation and instrument cleaning equipment. They also provided refreshmante for the attendees.

Our May meeting had a footwear theme as we welcomed Martin Nunn, Hotter Comfort Concept shoes new Podiatry advisor. Martin's presentation was informative and enjoyable. Update on HPC Matters and closure of the profession/title protection issues. This meeting was eloquently presented by Marcel Pooke, and gave us much cause for thought. He firstly talked about the history of the profession and then went on to look at possible future developments. This study day proved to be extremely successful, enjoyable, and a credit to the Branch. The two speakers, Dr. Sally Edmonds (Consultant Rheumatologist) and Simon Otter (Podiatrist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton) gave extremely interesting and accessible presentations. Our last meeting of 2003 featured a presentation on “Anaphylaxis” by Jane Lambert from ECG Limited; consultants/trainers in resuscitation. Jane discussed the differences between anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid, and then went through the signs and symptoms and emergency management.
